Fostering STEM Inclusion At High Schools
Kids of color and girls are underrepresented in STEM-related subjects at high-schools. This dissuades them from pursuing similar subjects at the college level as well. As a result, this underrepresentation continues in STEM-related careers. Given that such fields now account for the largest sector of employment, lack of diversity in them is already a big social issue. StemClusion addresses this problem right at high-school. We are a group of students with two passions: learning STEM-related subjects and a strong desire to foster inclusion. StemClusion combines these two passions into one organization that aims to ensure STEM-related fields attract people with all backgrounds.
No one should feel like they don’t have resources to pursue their interests in the areas of science and technology.
The race disparity in the award of STEM-related college degrees is glaring. Many of kids of color do indeed want to study STEM-related subjects. Data shows that many, according to one study up to 40%, who sign up for a STEM-related concentration change it prior to graduation. We believe that this is because of lack of preparedness at the school level. Moreover, those kids with parents with STEM-related degrees or careers in these areas are more likely to pursue their education in similar areas. These factors perpetuate the racial disparity in STEM fields.
